Darkening on Elbows, Knees, Body Skin: Why Does This Happen and What Can I Do?
What causes elbows, knees and certain areas of body skin to darken?
Natural darkening can be a build up of dead skin cells accumulating over the years and not exfoliated properly.
One of the most common causes of darkened skin in these areas is contact or photo contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin is irritated by its contact with irritants or allergens. Photo contact dermatitis occurs when those irritants are stimulated by light (many allergens, such as fragrances, dyes and preservatives, are also photo-allergens, which can react with light to cause darkening). Darkening after a skin trauma (such as a pimple, insect bite, or rash) is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which could also be a cause.
The other cause is an accumulation of dead skin cells or a constant friction on the elbows, knee’s, etc
